Meet Deez Wax — The Producer Behind Some of Canada’s Next Big Artists

Name: Dustin Jensen

Talent Name: Deez Waxx

Category: Musician • Producer • Audio Engineer • DJ • Emcee / Freestyle Emcee

💬 INTRODUCTION

My name is Dustin Jensen, also known as Deez Waxx, and I’m originally from Lethbridge, Alberta. Music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. My father taught me how to play the blues on guitar at an early age, and I grew up listening to The Beatles, Queen, and whatever else my parents had in their record and CD collection. That’s where my love for music started.

In high school, most of my friends listened to hip hop, and that’s what pulled me into the culture. After hearing Rahzel, I started beatboxing, which was my first real involvement beyond just listening. By the time I was 19–20, I was freestyle rapping, writing lyrics, and recording my first songs. The producer I began working with eventually became too busy, and that’s when I discovered Fruity Loops and Cool Edit Pro. Those programs changed everything — they were my introduction to producing and recording my own hip hop music.

After a few years of learning and experimenting on my own, I applied to the University of Lethbridge’s Digital Audio Arts program with demos I made in my apartment. It was the very first year the program existed, and I was accepted. The program covered everything: recording, mixing, mastering, acoustics, music theory, history, synthesis — all the foundational skills I still use today. Even though I didn’t finish the full degree, the knowledge I gained shaped the artist and engineer I’ve become.

I eventually moved back to Edmonton for the third time, reconnecting with friends and family, and continued producing for others. That led me into electronic music, especially drum & bass and EDM, which I explored while spending time in Calgary with friends who were DJs. In 2018, I shifted back to hip hop and got deep into audio gear — specifically microphone preamps and compressors. Analog gear changed my life. I studied everything I could, read endless reviews, tested different sound chains, and built my setup piece by piece.

With years of experience recording rappers in different cities and experimenting across genres — hip hop, electronica, rock, and more — I eventually stepped into DJing in 2022. My buddy DJ 12TEN introduced me to live DJing for the Jung Kings, and thanks to my producer background, it clicked fast. Since then, I’ve been active in the Edmonton community, playing beats for freestyle sessions and helping support local artists.

At this point in my journey, my biggest success is my sound — the craft I’ve built, the skills I’ve developed, and the ability to create music at every level from concept to final master.

🎚️🎛️ THE PASSION

I draw inspiration from music, the community around me, and the impact both have had on my life. Ever since I was young, it always felt like music carried a bit of destiny in it for me. Whether that destiny leads to something huge or simply becomes the journey I’m meant to follow — only time will tell. What I do know is that music has shaped me, grounded me, and pushed me forward every step of the way.

🍁 COMMUNITY & CANADIAN PRIDE

I love being Canadian, and I’ve always been a creative at heart. One of my favorite things about Canada is the variety — different cultures, different experiences, and a huge spectrum of stories to pull inspiration from.

There’s a real opportunity here to build a good life, to be happy, and to create freely.

Canada is full of art, diversity, and perspectives, and all of that feeds into the well I draw from as an artist.

🏆 BUILDING THE DREAM

One of my biggest standout moments has been developing the ability to really recognize and solve audio problems in my workspace. As I’ve grown in mixing and mastering, everything has started coming into focus — not just my music, but my life. Understanding sound on a deeper level has given me clarity, direction, and a stronger connection to what I create.

🤝 NETWORKING SPOT

I’m always on the lookout for exciting new artists to produce, but when it comes to collaboration, I’m very selective. In my experience, sometimes it works — and sometimes it really doesn’t.

What matters most to me is personal chemistry with the artists I choose to invest my time into. That connection makes the creative process worthwhile. For me, collaboration is rooted more in friendship than strictly business.

🎶CLOSING

I’m always working on something, so you can guarantee you’ll be hearing from me — or from one of the artists I’m producing — very soon. When it comes to my personal ventures, I’m a pretty private person, but my goals stay the same: to create the highest-quality music I can. Whether it’s production, mixing, or mastering, I’m focused on pushing my craft as far as it can go.

COMETS QUESTIONS

COMET: What first inspired you to start making music and producing beats?

DEEZ WAXX: My father originally got me into guitar at a young age. Later on, when my OG producer dropped me, I picked up the reins myself — that’s really when everything started for me as a producer.

COMET: Which of your own tracks are you most proud of so far — and why?

DEEZ WAXX: Deez Waxx – “Teeth” ft. Illiam. It’s just a straight banger with a killer beat. The whole track turned out great, in my opinion.

COMET: Can you describe your typical process when you sit down to produce a beat or write lyrics?

DEEZ WAXX: When I’m making beats, my recording program always opens with a self-designed template I’ve been perfecting for years. It’s built to make the whole process streamlined — all my routing, tools, and track setups are ready instantly. It’s a very intentional system that makes creating super convenient.

COMET: Who are your biggest influences (musical or otherwise), and how do they show up in your work?

DEEZ WAXX: My biggest influence is hip-hop from the ’90s to now. I center my mixing values around the average of that era-to-now blend, plus what works best for modern streaming on Spotify. I use a hybrid mixing technique that balances loudness and clarity for both listening and streaming.

COMET: How do you stay motivated during a creative slump or when things aren’t clicking?

DEEZ WAXX: Sometimes the best move is to take an honest break and pay attention to your needs outside of music. Then you come back and see where it takes you.

COMET: How does your role as producer differ from being an artist — do you approach them differently?

DEEZ WAXX: My goals and values are a little different compared to a rapper or a band, but honestly, I prefer working more in the background anyway.

COMET: If you could collaborate with any artist (dead or alive), who would it be — and what kind of track would you make together?

DEEZ WAXX: I love collaborating with good friends — that’s when it feels the most natural. But dream-collab wise? Someone like Merkules, Snoop Dogg, or B-Real from Cypress Hill. It’s just more fun when you genuinely enjoy the person you’re creating with.

COMET: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone just starting out in music production or rap today?

DEEZ WAXX: Love what you do until it hurts. Only then will you know you’ve pushed too far — and eventually you’ll realize it still isn’t enough.

COMET: Where do you see your career going in the next 3–5 years — what are your goals and dreams?

DEEZ WAXX: Where indeed. Honestly, I have no idea what “ultimate success” looks like, and I carry plenty of doubts. But I do feel like I accomplish a lot — so it has to be heading somewhere. This one’s a “time will tell” kind of journey.

COMET: You’ve shown a lot of range already — but are there still hidden talents or layers people haven’t seen yet, or is this the full Deez Waxx story so far?

DEEZ WAXX: My friends might be able to tell you more than I can. But yeah — come to the freestyle sessions, they’re a blast. And I love to DJ, so don’t forget to enjoy the beats.

Thank you for tapping into this feature and getting to know the mind behind DEEZ WAXX. From production to mixing to pushing creative boundaries, his journey is far from over — and you’ll be hearing a lot more from him and the artists he’s shaping. Stay tuned, stay tapped in, and keep supporting Canadian talent.
